Space wonders and the mystery of the heechee

This sequel to Gateway is a marvel, furr of wonder and mystery, of zany encounters and strange space artifacts of the mysaterious Heechee. Some mysteries are solved, but rhey lead only to furtherb puzzlers. I love the character of Janine, and how she's the only capable to glean informations out of the enigmatic Wan. A book I recommend, narrated with the wry Pohl's humour. Loved it!

On par with Gateway

A superb, accomplished follow-up to the exciting Gateway novel. This story is much more complex and intricate - Pohl masterly juggles a lot of balls at once, with multiple story lines, characters, space science, mathematics, politics, thought experiments, and of course, Pohl's typical onslaught of sex jokes. It's also told through multiple characters - from first person to third - including, even, from the point of view of a disembodied Neanderthal brain trapped in an all-powerful-space-station-controlling robot. (It'll make sense, don't worry.) It's fascinating to see the continued evolution of Robin Broadhead (from Gateway) - for big parts of the book, the reader isn't quite sure if his risk-taking will end in glory or in poverty. Also, of course, it's wonderful to uncover more truth about the Heechee.

About the Author

Victoria Fontan is Director of Academic Development and Associate Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies, at the United Nations-mandated University for Peace in San Jose, Costa Rica. Prior to this appointment, she was a Fellow to the Iraq Project at the Center for International Conflict Resolution at Columbia University. As a freelance journalist, Fontan has worked in Iraq for Deutsche Welle Radio and Television, for the Baghdad Bulletin, and for The Independent, based in the United Kingdom. Her many roles have also included serving as Research Fellow at Sabanci University in Turkey, Research Associate at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, and Visiting Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at Colgate University in New York.

About the Author
GEORGE P. MOSCHIS is Professor of Marketing and Director of the Center for Mature Consumer Studies at Georgia State University, Atlanta.

EUEHUN LEE is Assistant Professor of marketing at Sejong University in Seoul, Korea. He is an affiliate member of the Center for Mature Consumer Studies at Georgia State University. Dr. Lee has worked as consultant and marketing researcher for several firms and government agencies in Korea and the United States. His research interests include the effects of life events on consumer behaviors over one's life span.

ANIL MATHUR is Associate Dean for faculty Development and Associate professor of Marketing at the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, Hofstra University. He has published over thirty articles in journals and conference proceedings. His research interest is in the areas of Consumer Behavior, Services Marketing, Marketing Research and Research Methodology. Dr. Mathur has consulted with numerous corporations on a multitude of marketing problems.

JENNIFER STRAUTMAN is an Atlanta-based freelance writer and editor. She earned her Master of Science degree in marketing from Georgia State University. Earlier in her career, she worked for the Associated Press as a newswriter and for the State Taxation Institute in Atlanta as a reporter for several publications for attorneys, CPAs and other professionals in the tax arena. Most recently, Ms. Strautman worked in public affairs and communications as an associate with an Atlanta consulting firm.

The work of Karel Martens occupies an intriguing place in the present European art-and-design landscape. Martens can be placed in the tradition of Dutch modernism – in the line of figures such as Piet Zwart, H.N. Werkman, Willem Sandberg. Yet he maintains some distance from the main developments of our time: from both the practices of routinized modernism and of the facile reactions against this. His work is both personal and experimental. At the same time, it is publicly answerable. Over the now 50 years of his practice, Martens has been prolific as a designer of books. He has also made contributions in a wide range of design commissions, including stamps, coins, signs on buildings. Intimately connected with this design work has been his practice as an artist. This started with geometric and kinetic constructions, and was later developed in work with the very material of paper; more recently he has been making relief prints from found industrial artefacts. This book looks for new ways to show and discuss the work of a designer and artist, and is offered in the same spirit of experiment and dialogue that characterizes the work it presents.

Terrible. Don't waste your time or money.

I don't often post reviews but I had to for this book, to prevent others from wasting time or money on it. I'm glad I bought it used for very little. The author is a good writer; I don't find any fault with her writing skills at all. However, this is not a Harlequin Presents. It's a little novel about the hardships endured by medical staff at refugee camps, along with some detailed medical procedures and a little bit of romance. I don't know what editor at Harlequin decided to put this out as a Harlequin Presents Extra. It should have been part of their Medical Romance line. The romance part of the story is totally unbelievable. There was hardly anything about their developing feelings, their past romances (except that she was a widow with a sad history), nothing that drew me into the romance at all. The book was mostly about the medical and cultural situations and there was very little about their relationship. There were perhaps 2-3 intimate scenes, one of about 2 paragraphs and the other literally one sentence -- I had to laugh when I saw that this was supposed to be one of their "Extra" books. And the ending was abrupt and pretty ridiculous. I view Harlequin Presents as a bit of an escape, and this one totally failed.
