After school,Iris borrows her friend Walter's harmonica, given to him by his grandmother. When it disappears, she worries about Granny's reaction. But the woman is understanding, and the missing instrument turns up unharmed. Iris and Walter are endearing individualists, with interesting taste in headgear. They are a refreshing addition to the limited literary offerings for this age group. Guest neatly ties up the mystery, deals with the drawbacks and advantages of having a little sister, and shows readers the warmth and support of Iris's extended family. The text is appropriately composed for young readers without being boring, repetitive, or preachy. Davenier's pen-and-ink illustrations are sunny and full of activity, with Baby Rose in seven different places at once. The deceptively simple drawings convey a range of emotions on the children's faces, and even the cat has a personality. Iris is looking forward to sharing her homemade button necklace with her class at show-and-tell until her baby sister, Rose, breaks it. "You can't take your eyes off Baby Rose for a minute," says their mother. At school, Iris cheers up when Walter shares his new harmonica with her, and he even lets her take it home to practice. The next morning, though, the harmonica has disappeared, leaving Iris to face Walter and tell him it is lost. The friends, together with their families, find the missing present where busy Baby Rose hid it, and the story ends on a celebratory note. As in the series' previous titles, Davenier's ink-and-watercolor illustrations capture the chaos of family life and children's play in swooping strokes and cozy colors, and Guest's simple, descriptive sentences and familiar, easily resolved dramas continue to be just right for new readers. all new easy to read adventure!

Iris and Walter are back for another adventure. This time Walter gets a harmonica from his grandmother. He is so proud of the gift and learns to play it. He brings it to show and tell at school. Iris really likes the harmonica and asks to borrow it. Walter agrees and Iris takes it home. Some how Iris loses the harmonica! Will she be able to find it? Will Walter understand? Read #7 in the Iris and Walter story to find out!
The book is a good story for early readers. The chapters are short and easy to read. It would make a great selection for 1st and 2nd graders.
I would recommend this book to other. This is part of a series of books based on the characters Iris and Walter. It's a good way to get kids to enjoy reading.

A hit with grandchildren

I'd thought this series of books would be too juvenile for my 8 1/2 year old grand-daughter as she's reading on her own much more challenging chapter books, but she and her six year old sister hung on every word and we read all in this boxed set in one setting. Good quality paper, binding and illustrations add to the pleasure. The fact that the best friends are girl and boy is very appealing as a way for children to learn more about the opposite gender if there is no one who fills that role in the family.
