I bought this book based on the reviews. One review said if you were a Christian, you'd like this book...I read the sample and it seemed alright...not great but enjoyable. I guess I was shocked when the explicit sex scenes appeared! So, I felt I should warn anyone who finds that sort of thing objectionable.

Why can men write a better love story?

Although I admit it is not the virgin falls in love with hate filled old man scenario of the Harlequin Romance novels it is not far behind in cliché cheesiness. It starts out in high school with a extremely wealthy girl Ann and her neighbor boy Todd who is in love with her because she taught him solitaire. She meets the new guy Kent and after a few pages she is in love with him and he has broken things off to marry another girl. Her solution throw her whole life away. Which includes not graduating high school, marrying Todd she does not like, forgoing a magnificent wedding to elope, and move across the country in a wagon to be a farm wife. Which is something they have only read about. In fact he read about not her it is his dream not hers. She just wants to never see Kent again.
Ann and Todd begin their loveless marriage in separate rooms trying to fall in love with each other. She is so ignorant of cooking she does not even know to take the shells out to scramble eggs and he takes a job at the bank (father owns the bank and he left so he would not have to work there). This is just one of many unbelievable or not well thought out situations in the book.
Between Anns constant admirations of her husband and promises that she will love him like a wife should I wonder who is in love with who? Todd spends his days thinking about having sex and starting arguments over nothing every time Ann says hello to him. Why anyone would leave servants, friends family and endless clothes shopping for a man she did not love?
I barely notice the period. The language does not show it. It seems irrelevant anyway. By the end of the book I had fell out of love with Todd. He seemed a selfish, petty, horny, argumentative jerk. Todd's love was not apparent to me. Aside from Ann saying he was good in her constant affirmations and admirations of him I never seen any proof of love or devotion from Todd. I wondered why Ann was so desperate to be with him. The whole book seemed contrived to me just to set up a cheesy first time sex love scene.

Really Sweet and Romatic

Todd and Ann were rally good together (by the middle). Ann was a little annoying in the beginning, but then she's a teenager and I guess I was annoying when I was that age too. I read Eye of the Beholder 1st and loved it so I came back and bought this one. I enjoyed it too! It was a nice, romantic read, I'm happy I bought it.
