This book is the first English language translation of the famous Tibetan death text, "The Great Liberation upon Hearing in the Intermediate State." Also known as the "Bardo Thodol" which means "liberation by hearing on the after death plane", it was originally written in the Tibetan language and is meant to be a guide for those who have died as they transition from their former life to a new destination.

Not quite what I expected
By sane martian
This was not quite what I expected. I won't vote it down too much based on this as I simply didn't know what I was getting into exactly. Literally prayers to be said over people that are dying, etc. I would recommend interpretations of this for most people.

First English Transl. Beautiful language tho 'dated'
By A. Ives
I have not read any other translations of the tibetan book of the dead, but I will say that this one is beautifully written and written in a way that is accessible. The book was written by an Indian Buddhist for the Tibetan people (I think in Sanskrit). I can connect with the text much better than the Upanishads, even. I find that (tho I was brought up in an 'orthodox' Lutheran church) St. John of the Cross' Dark Night of the Soul has been remarkably helpful to me. I have to say that Bardo, tho a state reached after the death of the body, is a state that appeals to me and is understood by me very readily and is a state that I believe to be connected to the dark night. I affirm this book as the product of true visionary experience in the manner of Revelation. I neglected to read the book for awhile because of the ritual that is talked about. However, the ritual is only the reading of 'prayers' (maybe mantras ?), and i find that to be illuminating. It is far from empty. Mainly I will say that this is a powerful book made possible by the collaboration between the original writer and the translator. I bought it on kindle for $1.72 (public domain), but if the translations were all the same price, I would, at this point, want to own this original English one along with any others. I do not suppose that the translation was made without sacrifices. There are many words peculiar to Western, English-speaking culture, indeed to Christianity, that are used in this text. But, I figure, unless we've got access to a Buddhist teacher, we need some mediation. Also, I think that through reading the entire text, the word 'righteousness,' e.g., may be understood with a subtlety suiting the Buddhist concept it is attempting to translate.

Maybe I'm just ignorant but this translation is essentially incomprehensible.
By E. Skipp
I consider myself a good reader. Once when I was in the 4th grade they told me I read like a high-schooler, not to brag or anything. However, this translation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead is essentially gibberish. Maybe it's meant to be gibberish? Maybe I need to get in touch with my spiritual side a little more? Uncertain.

Sample sentence from the first two pages:
"Herein lieth the setting-face-to-face to the reality in the intermediate state: the great deliverance by hearing while on the after-death plane."

I think I understand what they're saying. All the words are words I know. Do they make The Tibetan Book of the Dead cliff notes?
