More Excitement, More Energy, OVerall just great!

If the first book in the X-Wing series was great, then Wedge's Gamble, the second in the acclaimed X-Wing series was phenominal. It took everything great about the first book and turned up the heat. Wedge's Gamble, has WEdge Antilles and his Rogue Squadron on an impossible mission: disable the shields of Curuscant, the seat of Imperial Power. They have to deal with rogue agents, unpleasant surprises, deadly enemies and a traitor or two in their midst. Stackpole takes his characters and crafts a remarkable story. As a stand alone book its very good as part of the X-Wing series its awesome. Once again Stackpole focuses on Corran Horn a character who is not omnipotent, who does make mistakes, sometimes crucial ones. He is a very strict former cop who has the ego of an elite pilot just to make things interesting. It's not just Horn who is well drawn but the other characters as well. As the main villain Isard is chilling, but it's the hidden agenda of Fliry Vorru that hinges the story. Full of laserfights, space battles and one really big storm, Wedge's Gamble is a superb addition to the X-Wing series and the expanded universe.

X-Wing #2 - Spies in Space.

Having introduced the core cast of characters in Rogue Squadron, author Michael Stackpole now begins weaving plot lines that will no doubt run through the next few books in the series. As the first story ended the Rebellion had won a strategic victory that could be the first step to capturing the Imperial Capital planet of Coruscant, or so they have been led to think. The new Imperial Leader Ysanne Isard actually has an evil scheme to destroy the Rebellion, and our characters seem to be playing right into her slimey hands.
Sadly Stackpole cheats a bit in his narrative, characters bump into each other far too easily on what is supposed to be such a crowded and construction jumbled planet, also a team of elite fighters sent on a spying mission? The Rebellion can't be that hard up for agents and warriors. On the plus side Stackpole allows the emotional toll of living a resistance fighters life show in his characters, which makes the tension all the more real, as does his frequent use of cliffhanger chapter endings. In the end the pluses outweight the minuses and Star Wars X-Wing: Wedge's Gamble remains a taut read until the climatic battle. Recommended.

Not as good as the first book, but still a good read

This book wasn't as good as the first one, but is still worth a read.
Michael A. Stackpole is a great writer, and this book is no exception - the writing is great. It's the story line that isn't so great. First off, a squadron of fighter pilots would never be given the mission that Rogue Squadron gets. These guys are pilots, yet for some reaon they are sent undercover on a reconnaissance mission to infiltrate the very heart of the empire - Imperial Center on Coruscant. This makes the entire story a little tough to swallow.
Second problem is the way the Rogues keep bumping into one another. It would never happen on a world as huge as Coruscant.
Third issue is the way Wedge reacts when Corran reports seeing one of the Rogues meeting with Imps. Corran is a realiable source, and he saw it with his own eyes. Yet Wedge totally blows it off, even though they're in the midst of such a sensitive mission. Totally unrealistic.
Anway, it's still worth the read, and has a good ending. I hope book three is better.

ER it's not

Growing up, nurse Annie always had issues with her weight and those issues come to rear their ugly head when she discovers her bridesmaid dress doesn't fit and there is only six days until the wedding. If that weren't enough after a grueling workout, in an attempt to squeeze into the dress, she meets the new doctor at work, Iosef. His family is the next thing to royalty in Sydney, Australia and for some reason he takes an instant and intense dislike to Annie. All that grumpiness melts away though at the wedding that ends with them in bed together. Iosef has family obligations and can't have a relationship but still their feelings are too strong to be denied and they start seeing each other.

I greatly enjoyed this novel. Most of the time I had no clue what was going on with the medical jargon being I get all my medical knowledge from ER, Grey's Anatomy and House and things are obviously done a LOT differently in Australia, but for me that was part of the charm. The life at the hospital and the patients where interesting and very well done, along with the budding romance between the reserved Iosef and the insecure Annie. I would have easily and unequivocally given this light years better than the average harlequin five stars but, like with all harlequins there is nothing from the hero's point of view and so when we suddenly realize the reason he kept his relationship with Annie a dirty little secret I wanted to smack him, not forgive him. There was a point about 2/3s of the way through the book that was the PERFECT time to explain what was happening but he didn't. It bugs me when dishonesty keeps couples apart and if we are supposed to believe he loved her then why they heck would he let her get away rather than just be honest with her?

Aside from all that this was a wonderful story. A typical harlequin, but with characters you could relate to, interesting setting and touching love story.

Great story

This is about Dr. Iosef Kolovsky who is a doctor as well as part of the wealthy Kolovsky family who is like royalty in Australia, so the press follows his family for any and every little bit of news all the time. The 'lady' in the story is Nurse Annie Jameson. It's an unlikely match, but it works. There is a lot of medical terminology in the story, but I don't think it takes away from the book. I would recommend this book.

Really enjoyed this. I like how it reads as if the 1920's and 30's feel as modern now as they probably were then. Also touches on all the ways in which life isn't always as glorious and glamorous for celebrities as one might superficially think. I was upset by the scene in which Gladys was orally raped by a couple of scumbags when she was seven and even more so by how she never evidently told anyone about it and how the guys probably even got away with it, however I was happy to see that Capone later treated her like a queen even though I couldn't appreciate that he was cheating on his wife and probably more so with scores of other women, and may even have other children other than John Walton and Sonny Capone. Can't say I'm altogether as satisfied with this biography as the one written by his niece Deirdre Capone in "Uncle Al Capone"; there might be some misinformation because according to Deirdre's account Capone was a high school graduate and according this one and numerous others he dropped out of school in the 6th grade. However I at least got a chance to see another side to Capone's personality that I feel isn't really brought out in many other biographies, and really wanted to know what he was like around women. It really displayed many interesting facets to his character that most don't know about.

Capone Cavorts and a view of worms to give one pause

A gripper, an unknown side of Capone, lovely insights into Valentino, and the Hollywood world of that era. Particularly endearing friendship with friend Mabel. Unknown point in book: tapeworms used for weight loss (and we thought we were obsessive in this era). Kathryn Jordan takes an account of Gladys by her son, John Walton, and transmutes his story into an account of which the reader cannot put down.

I loved the characters, the one armed guy who was maimed and brutal in his work but so protective of Gladys. Gladys' purpose and ambition, her friendships, her spunk.

What a page-turner "Gladys and Capone" turned out to be. We get a front row seat into the exceptional life and times of silent film movie star Gladys Walton. What an exciting ride gifted writer Kathryn Jordan takes us on as she translates Gladys' life through the accounts Gladys revealed to her son, John Walton, over the years.

All the usual suspects of that day are present and accounted for as well as some unique characters you'll not soon forget. Much of the drama and behind the scenes Hollywood monkey business you always wanted to know about are there too.

Gladys meets a "Second Hand Furniture Dealer" who changes her life. That's what Alphonse Capone's business card reads. Funny, insightful read.

This book was very funny, but, with great insight.
The perspective of women and men on each separate topic was quite balanced.
This is the type of book in which the authors say what everyone else is thinking, but, would not dare speak out loud in mixed company!
